It has been over a year since Jordi Alba left Barcelona in favor of a move to Inter Miami. A player known for his technical quality on the flanks, Alba’s exit was a double-edged sword for Barcelona.

While some felt the veteran’s prime was behind him, others argued that replacing him in the left-back position would not be an easy task.

Filling his shoes was never going to be easy, but it seems Barcelona may have finally found his heir in Alejandro Balde.

Balde coming into his own

As reported by SPORT, Balde has taken a significant leap forward this season. Injuries had hampered his development last year, but with fitness on his side and Hansi Flick’s fast-paced system playing to his strengths, Balde is flourishing.

His attacking output has improved tremendously, and he has already set a personal record for goal assists.

So far this season, Balde has racked up seven assists in all competitions, surpassing his previous best of six in the 2022/23 campaign.

His recent performances suggest that number will only grow. Balde’s pace and precision in delivering crosses have been a key asset for Barcelona, much like Alba in his prime.

Balde’s assists have come in crucial moments. In La Liga, as well. The youngster notably set up Robert Lewandowski for a goal in the Bernabeu derby and provided a decisive cross for Dani Olmo in the Montjuïc clash against Espanyol.

His contributions in the Champions League include an assist against Stade de Brest and one that led to an own goal against Young Boys.

He was also instrumental in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club, helping set up Gavi’s goal in a dominant 2-0 win.

Balde’s unquestionable talent, coupled with his ability to perform in crucial matches have now made him Barcelona’s ideal long-term successor for Alba, though it will be imperative that the club do not overburden the player with too much pressure.
