According to Mundo Deportivo, it appears that Barcelona have restarted discussions with Defensor Sporting regarding Patricio Pacifico’s future.

It must be remembered that while the 20-year-old’s progress was halted by a serious knee injury earlier this year, the Catalan club remain committed to finding a pathway that could eventually see him become a permanent Barcelona player.

Pacifico joined Barcelona Atletic during the winter transfer window on a loan agreement that included a purchase option linked to appearances.

The original deal stipulated that a permanent transfer would become mandatory if the defender reached ten matches.

Before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the youngster had managed seven appearances and was gradually becoming a trusted option within the squad.

Barcelona maintain faith in Pacifico

It is known that Barcelona had already been leaning towards exercising the purchase clause regardless of whether he reached the required number of matches.

The injury changed the immediate situation, but not the club’s long-term view of the player.

As a result, talks are now centred around extending his loan for another season.

Should Pacifico eventually make the three additional appearances required under the original agreement, the permanent transfer process would be activated.

As such, the report adds that Barcelona could still decide to sign him even if that threshold is never reached.

Focused on recovery

Meanwhile, the defender’s recovery is currently progressing according to schedule.

Following surgery, Pacifico initially spent time with his leg immobilised before beginning rehabilitation at Barcelona’s training facilities.

The next stage of his recovery will focus on regaining mobility and strength under the supervision of the club’s fitness staff.

Simply put, rather than viewing the injury as a reason to walk away, the club seem determined to continue investing in a player they clearly believe has significant upside.
