Barcelona are continuing to work on the possible signing of Julian Alvarez, who is their leading striker target for the upcoming summer transfer window. However, a deal is looking very unlikely at this stage, given that Atletico Madrid have made it abundantly clear that they don’t want to sell, with these feelings having been made public.

Over the last couple of weeks, Atleti have used their X account to slam the speculation surrounding Alvarez, which included using fake announcements to say they had signed the likes of Pedri and Lamine Yamal. But rather than being dragged into a dispute, Barcelona have chosen to take a step back.

Rafa Yuste, who has been Barcelona’s acting president since the March election and will continue to hold the position until Joan Laporta is officially sworn in next month, issued his response to the situation when he spoke to TV3 on Friday (via Cadena SER).

“Atletico’s tweets are in a very bad taste. In Barcelona, we have a very clear way of acting as a club. I believe that ethics is above all and, therefore, we must continue to set an example, firstly me as president at the moment to the last member of the board of directors.

“This does not change any market plans. It has nothing to do with our sporting plan that Deco manages very well and, therefore, may he continue to do the great work he is doing. And we continue with the responsibility that Barcelona always has.”

Will Barcelona get their hands on Alvarez?

While it appears to be true that Alvarez does want to join Barcelona, Atleti are making it very clear that a deal will not be considered on their end. For now, the Catalans are prepared to buy their time, but if their La Liga rivals do not relax their stance, they would be forced to consider other options. The matter is on hold for now anyway, with the Argentine striker fully focused on the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
