Barcelona closely monitoring versatile Juventus full-back – Romano | OneFootball

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona are following Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso closely, although no final decision has yet been made regarding a formal approach.

While discussing the situation, Romano explained that several major European clubs have tracked Cambiaso in recent months because of his versatility and consistent performances in Serie A.

According to the journalist, “Manchester City had followed him in the past.

“Today, I would say it is more Barcelona who appreciate the player, but even there we will have to understand whether they really want to make an offer or not.”

Romano also added, “As of today, it is just an appreciation. The name of Cambiaso must be kept under observation.”

Need to reinforce full-back positions

Barcelona’s growing interest makes sense considering the uncertainty currently surrounding the full-back positions inside the squad.

Although strengthening other areas remains the club’s immediate priority, the sporting department is not ruling out defensive reinforcements later in the window if market opportunities become attractive enough.

Internally, there is no longer a feeling that every current starter is untouchable. 

In that regard, both Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde are no longer considered completely indispensable, meaning Barcelona would at least listen to major offers if they arrived this summer.

That changing dynamic has naturally forced the club to study versatile defensive profiles capable of increasing competition across the backline.

One of the biggest reasons Barcelona admire Cambiaso is his tactical flexibility.

The Italian defender is capable of operating naturally on both sides of the defence, something the club view as extremely valuable under Hansi Flick.

Notably, there are comparisons with Joao Cancelo because of Cambiaso’s ability to adapt across multiple roles while also contributing heavily during attacking phases.

That type of player profile fits perfectly within the modern full-back system Barcelona want to develop moving forward. 

The 26-year-old remains under contract with Juventus until 2029, with a market valuation of just €30 million. Hence, if Kounde or Balde are to leave, Barcelona can enter the market.
