Barcelona are bracing for the possible absence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who may soon undergo back surgery.

As reported before, the German goalkeeper is considering going under the knife after months of battling back discomfort.

If he decides to proceed, Ter Stegen could be sidelined for up to four months, a setback for the team, but one that could offer a surprising financial silver lining.

What’s the story?

According to Mundo Deportivo, due to FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, Barcelona could receive over €2 million in compensation during the German goalkeeper’s recovery period.

It is to be noted that Ter Stegen first reported back issues following Germany’s Nations League Final Four matches against Portugal and France on June 4 and 8.

Since then, he has been training separately from his teammates ever since reporting for the club duties.

FIFA’s insurance programme is designed to cover club salaries when players are injured during official international duty. If Ter Stegen is ruled out for more than 28 consecutive days, FIFA will begin compensating Barcelona.

In his case, the compensation could reach up to €20,548 per day. Over a four-month period, this would amount to approximately €2.465 million.

Sigh of relief for Barcelona

Beyond the direct compensation from FIFA, Ter Stegen’s absence would also ease Barcelona’s financial fair play situation.

His injury would free up 80% of his salary in La Liga’s financial control system, which could allow the club to register new signings like Joan Garcia without exceeding salary limits.

However, it is important to note that despite this accounting relief, Barcelona will still pay Ter Stegen his full salary during his recovery.

With Ter Stegen likely to undergo surgery, Barcelona could be on the receiving end of crucial financial support at a time when every euro counts.
