Andreas Christensen will remain at Barcelona for another two years. The Danish centre-back, whose previous contract was due to expire on 30 June, has reached an agreement with the club to extend his stay until 2028.

To make the extension possible, the 30-year-old centre-half agreed to a significant reduction in salary. His previous contract, signed when he joined on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022, made him one of the highest earners in the squad.

Termination clause included

Moreover, according to Mundo Deportivo, although Christensen’s deal is structured as a two-year extension, both parties have included a clause allowing them to part ways after the first season if either side feels the arrangement is no longer satisfactory.

Indeed, if the defender or Barcelona feel things are not working at the end of the 2026/27 season, they can exercise the termination clause to part ways a year before his contract expires.

Barcelona had inserted a similar clause in the contract extension offered to Wojciech Szczesny last year, and considering Christensen’s fitness issues, it makes sense for them to have a safeguard in place.

Christensen rejected other offers

As per the report, despite receiving financially superior proposals from Saudi Arabia, the Premier League and the Bundesliga, Christensen always prioritised staying at Barcelona.

The defender would have been available on a free transfer, making him an attractive option across Europe and beyond, but neither he nor his family had any desire to leave.

The 30-year-old is settled in Catalonia, where he and his family have made their home in Sitges, and he remains committed to succeeding at the club.

Ironically, despite Barcelona’s return to the renovated Spotify Camp Nou in November, Christensen has yet to play there due to his injury problems.

Hansi Flick played a key role

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick’s opinion was an important factor in the renewal. The German coach values Christensen’s experience and versatility, with the Dane capable of playing on either side of central defence as well as in midfield.

Moreover, the Blaugrana also appreciated Christensen’s professionalism off the pitch. Whenever the club faced registration issues with other players, he showed flexibility and acted in the interests of the team.

After two injury-disrupted seasons, the 30-year-old himself also felt he had unfinished business. He did not want to leave Barcelona without showing his full potential and making a greater contribution on the pitch.
