After a long wait, Barcelona have finally announced the contract extension of Marc Bernal, which was long in the making.

The young midfielder has signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2029, effectively sealing his long-term future at the club.

Bernal will join a long list of players who have already extended their contract at Barcelona in the recent past but he certainly won’t be the last.

Barcelona’s next contract priorities

According to SPORT, Barcelona sporting director Deco’s next two contract priorities after Bernal are Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia.

The Catalans have already been in talks with the agents of both players for a while now, and a breakthrough could be just around the corner.

This is applicable especially for De Jong, with the Dutchman likely to pen a new contract that will secure his long-term future at the club.

With De Jong replacing his old agent, the road is clear for the club to reach an agreement soon – something that both Deco and Joan Laporta have spoken about already.

Things are a little bit trickier when it comes to Garcia, but the talks have advanced positively, much thanks to Hansi Flick and the way the German has trusted him in defence this season.

As far as other renewal tasks are concerned, Andreas Christensen still faces an uncertain future at the club, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

The same applies to Robert Lewandowski. Although the Pole has been in brilliant form lately, a final call on his future will be taken later on, depending on his performance and market options.
