FC Barcelona will face Rayo Vallecano at an unusual 14:00 kick-off on Sunday, and the timing brings back a memory that most fans are unlikely to enjoy. Early starts are not especially common for the club, and when this fixture has fallen into that slot before, it has not gone especially smoothly.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the clearest precedent came in the 2023-24 season, when Barca visited Vallecas for another 14:00 match and were held to a 1-1 draw. There was considerable controversy surrounding the refereeing in that game.

The report recalls that Barca were unhappy with the officiating from Munuera Montero and the VAR team. The main complaints focused on Rayo’s goal, where Barca felt there may have been a positional offside, and above all on a possible late penalty on Raphinha that was not given.

That final incident is the one many supporters will remember most. In stoppage time, there was contact on Raphinha from a Rayo defender, but neither the referee nor VAR changed the decision, which left Barca furious at the end of the match.

This is not the first midday game in Hansi Flick’s time at the club either. Barcelona already played an early afternoon match last season, against Las Palmas, and lost 1-2 at Montjuic. That does not mean the kick-off time itself is a major problem.

However, it does add a slightly awkward backdrop to a game that already demands focus, especially against a Rayo side that usually make life uncomfortable. There is also a psychological angle here. When supporters hear “Rayo” and “14:00” together, the mind naturally goes back to that messy afternoon in Vallecas rather than to any sense of routine.

The solution is straightforward. Start well, take the referee out of the story as much as possible, and make this early kick-off feel very different from the last one fans still remember.
