Hansi Flick was clearly not very amused as he saw his side get only a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano in their last league game. In fact, he aired his unhappiness during the post-match press conference, and one of his quotes, “egos kill team success”, has been quite resounding in the media since then.
Several Barcelona players have been asked to clarify what these words from the German coach meant. Initially, it was Lamine Yamal, who highlighted the team’s lack of intensity as the reason why Flick made these comments.
Then, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, Pedri and Dani Olmo also gave their opinion on their coach’s statement. The former did so while addressing a press conference on Tuesday, as he said:
“You’d have to ask him. I don’t know who he was referring to. He’ll talk to us about it when the time comes.”
Before that, on Monday, he also opened up on his feelings on the general situation of the team in a TV interview, as he said:
“Last year we were all pulling in the same direction, we weren’t looking for personal success, we were looking for the team’s, and that was the key.”
Dani Olmo was also asked about Flick’s comments, but his words were quite different from Pedri’s, as he indicated that this thing had already been discussed in the Barcelona dressing room:
“We can be better or worse, but the objective is collective. We all want to play and win; the goal is shared, and everyone knows it. There’s no concern, we all have a very good relationship in the club and in the team. Flick doesn’t say anything in a press conference that he hasn’t already said to us beforehand.”
These conflicting versions from two senior players do not clear a lot of air about Hansi Flick’s comments. However, what is clear is that the coach is not very happy with his team’s performance, and the players will have to improve going forward to continue competing for the biggest trophies.
