Barcelona have been actively exploring options to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season.
According to SPORT, the club made initial contact regarding Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, but later shifted their focus towards signing a natural winger instead.
While Ekitike remains a highly admired talent, the Catalan giants believe their immediate need lies elsewhere.
The young French striker, who currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt, is among the most sought-after players in Europe. With 15 goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga last season, Ekitike turned heads with his consistent performances.
His striking partnership with Omar Marmoush was one of the highlights of Frankfurt’s campaign before the Egyptian completed a move to Manchester City in January.
Ekitike’s name has surfaced on the radar of top Premier League clubs as well, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all showing interest.

Liverpool, in particular, appear to be moving swiftly, especially with Darwin Núñez reportedly close to joining Napoli. Reports suggest that the Merseyside club have identified Ekitike as a direct replacement.
Barcelona, meanwhile, decided to pause their pursuit of Ekitike after determining that their squad’s immediate requirement was on the flanks rather than in the striker’s role.
This shift in strategy brought Nico Williams into focus, and now the club is on the verge of sealing his signature.
The 22-year-old winger from Athletic Club is reportedly preparing a farewell video for the Basque club and its supporters, signalling that a move is imminent.
Once Nico joins, manager Hansi Flick is expected to adjust his formation. Nico will likely take up the left wing role, allowing Flick to shift Raphinha into a central position as a No. 10 behind the main striker, adding creativity and fluidity to Barcelona’s attack.
Although Ekitike won’t be arriving this summer, Barcelona have not ruled out a future move. If he remains at Frankfurt beyond this window, he will be among the club’s top transfer priorities in 2026.
