Barcelona are continuing to work against the clock as they prepare for their first La Liga home game of the 2025/26 season.

Interestingly, according to journalist Helena Condis, the club has begun discussions to play the fixture against Valencia at Girona’s Montilivi Municipal Stadium.

The idea comes as Barça face major uncertainty over the state of the Spotify Camp Nou.

The club still needs the first occupancy permit from the City Council to allow fans back into the stadium, but so far the permit has not been granted. Without it, the Blaugrana cannot host matches at their home ground.

Adding to the complications, Barcelona do not yet have the Official Certificate of Works, a key document needed to open the stadium. This makes it very difficult for the team to meet the strict deadlines.

Girona deny contact

While talk of Montilivi as an alternative venue has surfaced, Girona have denied that any discussions have taken place.

Officials from the Catalan side insist that no one from Barcelona has contacted them. On top of that, the pitch at Montilivi is currently not in condition to host a top-flight game, raising further doubts about the feasibility of the plan.

Barcelona’s situation is becoming increasingly delicate, as there have also been talks of the game being played at Camp Nou behind closed doors, meaning without fans in the stands.

The club’s plan was always to return home in time for the new season, but with delays in construction and missing paperwork, there is now a genuine possibility that the first home fixture will not be played at Camp Nou.

For the Valencia clash, options remain limited. Montjuic, which was used last season, is booked due to a Post Malone concert just two days before the scheduled game.

The Johan Cruyff Stadium is another alternative, but it is far smaller in capacity and would not provide the same financial boost that Barcelona desperately need.
