It is no secret that Barcelona are on the hunt for a new centre-back, with Alessandro Bastoni emerging as the top pick.

The Inter Milan defender is regarded highly in the Barcelona camp due to his ball-playing qualities. But securing his services could be expensive, with Inter not too keen on offloading their star player.

While Barcelona remain keen on acquiring Bastoni’s services, they won’t sign him at any price. That is why sporting director Deco has already eyed a few alternatives in the market, including Jhon Lucumi.

Barcelona interested in Lucumi

According to Diario SPORT, Barcelona have identified Bologna defender Lucumi as a potential cost-effective alternative for Bastoni.

A left-footed centre-back by trade, Lucumi fits the profile Barcelona are looking for. A technically adept and physically strong centre-back who can operate alongside Pau Cubarsi.

At 27, Lucumi is not young per se. But he is currently at the peak of his powers and has ample experience of the Italian top-flight, having featured in almost 150 competitive matches for Bologna.

The most enticing factor about Lucumi is his valuation, with the defender being rated at around €25 million.

Although Barcelona’s interest is likely to drive up the defender’s valuation, he is being looked at quite favourably by the Catalans.

Lucumi’s contract at Bologna expires in 2027, meaning Barcelona will have more leverage in transfer negotiations, given that he could become eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement halfway through next season.

There is no doubt that Barcelona still consider Bastoni as the primary target for the summer of 2026. But if they fail to land the Italian international on a cut-price deal, it won’t be surprising to see the club making a move for Lucumi.
