Barcelona given hope of Marc-Andre ter Stegen summer exit

In order to make their desired signings, Barcelona must free up a significant portion of salary space over the course of the summer transfer window. Robert Lewandowski’s exit has helped in this regard, but more work must be done to move on the club’s higher earners that do not count for Hansi Flick.

Ansu Fati is one of those, and fortunately for Barcelona, he looks set to join AS Monaco on a permanent basis. Meanwhile, it is hoped that Andreas Christensen will agree a significant wage reduction, which would also free up more space. But the situation is far less straightforward with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is another that the Catalans are desperate to part ways with.

Ter Stegen still has two years left to run on his contract, but Barcelona are prepared to do everything they can to ensure that his salary can be removed from their books. However, there is a distinct lack of interest in the German goalkeeper, whose stock is at an all-time low – although one manager in particularly sees this as an opportunity.

Michel Sanchez brought ter Stegen to Girona in January, and according to MD, he has asked new club Ajax to explore the possible signing of the 34-year-old. The goalkeeper position is one that the European giant must address over the summer, and their new head coach has recommended a move for the Barcelona man.

Salary situation makes deal very difficult to achieve

The problem for Michel is that a deal for ter Stegen would be extremely difficult. Ajax would not be prepared to pay anywhere close to the salary that the goalkeeper currently earns at Barcelona, who would want a significant portion covered in the event that another loan deal is their only option in terms of a departure.

It means that ter Stegen would need to sacrifice a large amount of money in order to join Ajax, a move that he would welcome. However, he is under no obligation to agree to a wage cut, which makes things very tricky for the Dutch giants – and for Barcelona.
