Marcus Rashford’s future at Barcelona suddenly feels far less certain than it did just a few weeks ago.

Not long ago, there was a growing sense that the England international had done enough to earn another season in Catalonia.

His performances under Hansi Flick were productive, his relationship with the players remained positive, and there was a certain recognition that he had become an important attacking option during key moments of the campaign.

Now the situation has changed dramatically.

Why is that?

Barcelona’s push to complete the signing of Anthony Gordon has complicated the entire picture around Rashford’s continuity at the club.

The two deals are not directly linked on paper, but financially and structurally they affect the same area of the squad, and that is where doubts are beginning to appear.

The club already hold a €30 million purchase option for Rashford following his loan spell from Manchester United.

However, as per The Athletic, that clause expires on June 15, meaning a decision cannot be delayed much longer.

No decision yet

As far as the player is concerned, there is still cautious optimism.

Although no definitive message has been delivered by Barcelona to the player regarding his future, there is some optimism that he could continue next season, even if Gordon arrives.

While Hansi Flick appears supportive towards the forward, not everybody within the club shares the same level of conviction.

Senior figures within the sporting structure are said to believe Gordon’s arrival makes Rashford’s permanent signing significantly more difficult.

In simple terms, Barcelona may not see enough room, financially or tactically, to justify committing heavily to both players in the same summer.

For now, the Catalan side is obliged to inform Manchester United by June 15 whether they intend to activate the clause already agreed between the clubs last year.

At the moment, though, Manchester United are unwilling to soften the existing terms or renegotiate conditions and because of that, another loan arrangement cannot be completely ruled out.
