FC Barcelona have mainly focused on reinforcing their attack so far in this summer transfer window. They have already landed two new players for this area, i.e., Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, and these remain their only new first-team additions this summer.
Meanwhile, the Catalans are also working on the signing of the Portuguese fullback Joao Cancelo, who is expected to be their main addition to the defense. The midfield is already quite crowded, and the Blaugranes were not expected to make any additions to this area of the team at the start of the transfer window.
Still, they were being linked with the Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez in recent days, as some reports suggested that they are looking to land him to replace the injured Frenkie de Jong in their squad. Furthermore, with only one year left on his contract and the Spaniard looking to return to Spain, Barcelona believed getting him was a valuable market opportunity.
However, MARCA claims that the Catalans are still holding up their earlier stance of not signing a midfielder this summer, and they are not planning to enter any bidding war with Real Madrid for his signing.
There are two main reasons why they are not looking to enter such a race. Firstly, Flick already has several midfielders at his disposal, and competition for the three midfield spots is already very high. Secondly, the Spaniard is expected to cost €70 million, and the Blaugranes have other areas of the team that they want to strengthen with a higher priority.
In fact, another midfielder, Marc Casado, still remains on the exit ramp despite the injury suffered by de Jong. Even with him injured, Barcelona have players like Pedri, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casado available for the three midfield spots, while other players like Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia can also play in the midfield.
