FC Barcelona have made a sensational start to the 2026-27 season, winning all four of their opening matches by an aggregate score of 17-2. Their run continued on Sunday with a five-goal thrashing of Valencia at the Mestalla, with Lamine Yamal (x2), Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Pedri all finding the back of the net.

Barcelona have been relentless in front of goal, scoring seven more than closest challengers Alaves and Real Madrid (both 10). Their average of 4.25 goals per match would see them end up with 161 goals in La Liga if they were to continue across the remaining 34 matches, and while they are unlikely to do so, they have made club history with their fear across the opening four fixtures.

As per MD, 17 goals is the joint-third most that Barcelona that have amassed in their opening four matches of a La Liga season, only bettered in the 1950-51 (21 goals) and 1949-50 (19 goals) campaigns. They also scored 17 in 1957-58 and 2011-12, which the latter being under the management of a certain Pep Guardiola.

History does not bode well for Barcelona’s La Liga title chances

Barcelona are going for a third La Liga title in a row this season, but if history has anything to say, they will find it tough to achieve this feat despite their exemplary start. They did not win the league in any of the aforementioned campaigns, with Real Madrid winning both when 17 goals were scored in the opening four matches.

Hansi Flick’s side will not be bothered in the slightest by this history, although there is always a generate to make history of their own whenever they step on to the pitch. The only goal will be to extend their winning run as long as possible, as this will give them the best chance to complete a hat-trick of La Liga titles.
