FC Barcelona players endured a tough night on Tuesday as they were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid.
It was a painful moment, especially given that they won the second leg and the result of the two-legged tie could have gone the other way if not for some questionable officiating.
The night at the Metropolitano was especially tough for Fermin Lopez, who apart from having to cope with the anguish of the UCL exit, also had to deal with the pain from a nasty cut he suffered during the game.
After all, Fermin took a boot to his face from Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Juan Musso in the first half, which left him bloodied and battered on the pitch.
And, according to Javi Miguel of AS, Fermin had to go straight to a hospital upon his arrival in Barcelona from Madrid. The reason: his lip had to be stitched again.
The first treatment applied in the dressing room at Atletico Madrid’s stadium was not enough. Now, Fermin will have to rest for a few days to avoid infection.
In principle, he should be fit for the match against Celta Vigo next Wednesday, but his recovery will need to be monitored.
The Spanish international was one of the most affected by the elimination. His week, in terms of knocks, has been brutal. After suffering a cut on his forehead last week, he had to deal with a cut to his lip at the Metropolitano.
Fermin, however, showed great determination to stay on the pitch despite the pain and discomfort.
Up until that moment, he had been performing at a spectacular level. Afterwards, fatigue and pain took their toll. He received a huge ovation from the Barça fans when substituted in the second half.
Barcelona will not return to training until Saturday, which should give him enough time to rest and recover.
