Barcelona miss out on potential income as ex-academy defender leaves La Liga club for free

Barcelona have always tried to retain some sort of control over the future of La Masia graduates whom they sell to other clubs in the transfer market.

The club have worked hard in recent years to improve how they sell La Masia players, often keeping future percentages or sell-on clauses. In many cases, that has helped generate extra income later.

When Barça sold Oscar Mingueza to Celta Vigo, they retained a percentage of the future sale, in case the Spaniard was eventually sold to another club.

However, according to SPORT, Barcelona will not receive any money from Mingueza’s exit from Celta Vigo, with the former La Masia defender set to become a free agent.

Mingueza’s contract with Celta expires on 30 June, i.e., today, and unless there is a late surprise, he will leave Balaidos after four seasons at the club.

The important Barcelona angle is financial. The Blaugrana had kept 50% of Mingueza’s future transfer rights when he left Camp Nou for Celta in 2022, but that clause only mattered if the Galicians sold him before his contract expired.

A missed opportunity for Barça

This is frustrating because there was a real chance to make money from the operation. Mingueza was close to leaving in January, with Juventus offering €20 million for him.

Celta rejected that proposal because they wanted his release clause paid, partly because Barcelona were entitled to half of the transfer fee. Had that deal gone through, the Catalans could have earned around €10 million.

Instead, Celta kept the player, failed to renew him, and now both clubs lose out financially. For Barcelona, it is a reminder that retained percentages are useful only if the selling club actually sells.

Mingueza was an important player for Celta. This season, he played close to 3,000 minutes across 47 matches, contributing one goal and six assists. In total, he leaves after 147 official appearances for the Galician club.

La Masia value slips away

Mingueza’s time away from Barça has been positive. He left to find continuity and did exactly that, becoming a reliable and versatile player capable of operating as a centre-back or wing-back.

For Barcelona, though, this is a small economic setback. This time, the mechanism will not pay off.

Mingueza now becomes attractive in the market because he is free, with clubs from Italy, England and Turkey attentive to his situation.

For him, that is good news. For Barça, it is the opposite. The player rebuilt his career at Celta, but Barcelona will not benefit from the next step. A potential income stream has vanished, and at a club where every euro matters, that stings.
