Few weeks ago, it seemed destined that Bernardo Silva was going to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, putting an end to his glorious spell at the Etihad.

Barcelona were even tipped as a potential destination for the Portuguese international, who wanted his superagent Jorge Mendes to engineer a move to Camp Nou.

However, things have changed a bit at Man City, with a fresh report from Diario SPORT suggesting that Pep Guardiola may end up staying beyond this summer and fulfil his contract, which runs until 2027.

What does this mean for Silva?

According to the report, something has shifted significantly. Guardiola, dissatisfied with how the current season has unfolded, believes he has the quality in his squad to deliver better results in 2026-27 and is now leaning towards staying.

Crucially, the report suggests Guardiola would like to fulfil his contract alongside Silva, meaning the City manager is reportedly in favour of negotiating an unexpected extension with the Portuguese international.

Barcelona’s door not yet open

The other key factor in Silva’s decision is the uncertainty surrounding his move to Barcelona.

Deco has not been in a position to assure Jorge Mendes that his client has a guaranteed spot in the squad with a contract befitting his status.

With Barcelona prioritising other attacking signings and having plenty of options in Silva’s position, his move to the Camp Nou is far from certain.

Juventus are waiting patiently with a lucrative three-year offer, but Silva had set his heart on Barcelona.

With that door currently unclear and Guardiola now potentially staying at City, the 31-year-old faces a very different set of options than the ones he had mapped out just weeks ago.

His future is expected to be resolved before the World Cup kicks off on June 11.
