Barcelona outcast will report for pre-season on Sunday ahead of potential contract termination | OneFootball

According to SPORT, Oriol Romeu will report for medical examinations on Sunday, July 13, despite his uncertain future at Barcelona.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Girona, remains under contract with Barça until 2026 but has not been named in any official squad list by either club ahead of the new season.

It was initially expected that both Romeu and Barcelona would avoid an awkward reunion by delaying his involvement in pre-season training.

However, with no concrete resolution in place, the 33-year-old will be present at the Ciutat Esportiva for at least the first few days of training while his exit is negotiated.

Aiming for a friendly exit

Romeu is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans, nor is he considered essential by the sporting management. Barça are now faced with the task of finding a mutually beneficial exit route.

This could either be through another loan where the receiving club pays his wages or by terminating his contract so he can leave as a free agent.

So far, no direct talks have been held to finalise either of these options, meaning the player will remain around the first-team facilities until an agreement is reached.

Thankfully, the relationship between Romeu and the club remains cordial, and both parties are reportedly confident of reaching a solution in the coming weeks.

There is interest

Girona, where Romeu impressed previously, are still monitoring his situation and remain interested in bringing him back, if the financial package is reasonable.

The player himself is understood to be open to returning to Michel’s side, having always admired the club’s sporting project and environment.

Several other La Liga teams are also keeping an eye on Romeu’s status, but none can make a move until he formally parts ways with Barça.

While nothing will likely be finalised this week, an agreement is expected soon, possibly before the squad departs for the Asian tour.
