Barcelona’s young midfield talent Dro Fernandez is closing in on a move to PSG, and talks are said to be in their final stages.

The French club already have a verbal agreement in place with the young star and talks are currently ongoing to see PSG and Barcelona agree on a mutually accepted fee for the player.

In any case, the deal is expected to be closed in the coming days with the player likely to complete his move in the ongoing winter transfer market. After all, it was Dro who initiated the departure by directly asking to leave.

Laporta is worried

As reported on an exclusive update by The Touchline, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is highly disturbed by Dro’s move to PSG and he does not see what the youngster did to be right in any capacity.

The midfield phenom’s move to France is likely motivated by money, as is usually the case with PSG who have no hesitation in offering big-money deals. While Dro externally projects that his move is motivated by a lack of playing time, that is unlikely to be the case.

Laporta thus believes that Dro is setting a terrible example for La Masia players. He is afraid that more young talents will begin taking the route taken by him, and that a money-motivated drain of talents could escalate.

Losing young talents to external clubs that pay high wages to teenage stars, after all, would endanger Barcelona’s entire sporting vision of developing talents internally in their academy and promoting them to the first team.

While Laporta’s fears are genuine, it is also true that Dro is not the first and will not be the last academy star to choose money over loyalty. However, history is testament that such moves often do not turn out well for the player.

One recent example of such a situation was that of Ilaix Moriba who left Barcelona for RB Leipzig in 2021 but eventually failed in Germany. He was forced back to Spain and is currently playing for Celta Vigo, when he could well have been a first-team regular for Barcelona.
