The upcoming presidential election at Barcelona continues to generate headlines, and one of the biggest talking points recently has been the name of Erling Haaland.
Earlier reports suggested that Victor Font, one of the candidates running for the Barcelona presidency, was attempting to secure a preferential purchase option for the Manchester City striker.
The rumours gained traction after members of Font’s sporting team were seen leaving the hotel where Manchester City’s squad was staying in Madrid.
That sighting sparked speculation that discussions regarding the Norwegian forward might already be underway.
Speaking on Radio Barcelona during the programme Que t’hi jugues, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Font was asked directly about Haaland and Barcelona’s interest in the prolific forward.
The presidential candidate acknowledged the striker’s quality and explained why Barcelona must always be ready for opportunities involving players of that level.
“Haaland is one of the best centre forwards in the world, without a doubt.”
“In the short term, he is not available for signing because he renewed a very long-term contract last year.
“But personally, I am convinced that these 10-year contracts are rarely fulfilled.
“Anything is possible, and we have to be prepared for a player of this talent, who has said he likes Spain and declared last year that he loves Camp Nou, to make a move.”
Font clarified that the intention is not an immediate transfer but rather a long-term strategic move that could position Barcelona favourably if the opportunity arises.

The candidate explained that “we want to make a move that protects us and gives us these options. We are working on it and I am convinced that it can happen.”
He also emphasised that any major sporting decisions would involve coordination with head coach Hansi Flick, although discussions with the German manager will only begin in the coming days.
“We have the sports structure working in the market. We will only be able to talk to Flick starting on Monday, but in Haaland’s case, it is clear that, in the short term, neither the economic situation nor sports planning make him an immediate solution.
“Even so, we are convinced that we can have a preferential option.”
Font also addressed questions regarding potential conversations with Manchester City about such a possibility.
While he did not confirm any completed agreement, he suggested that discussions are ongoing and that the situation could evolve in the near future.
Asked if they have an agreement with City, he said, “We are talking, and I am convinced that we will do it. They have no interest in selling Haaland; it is a planning move.
“We hope to be able to announce it as soon as we can close the deal. I don’t know if it will be possible before Sunday.”
The presidential candidate also framed the potential move as part of his vision for Barcelona’s future competitiveness.
In the same vein, he said that “what I can commit to is that by voting for change, they will be voting for an alternative with the ability to do things right.
“Something that will prevent Madrid from signing Haaland and allow us to do so. And this excites the Cules.”
Finally, Font clarified that there has been no direct communication with Haaland himself, stressing that any discussions at this stage involve the clubs rather than the player.
“There has been no talk with Haaland because it’s a matter for the clubs, but you should know that Carles Planchart, whom Erling Haaland considers a second father, has a very close relationship with him.
“They love and appreciate each other very much. We mustn’t mislead people by saying that he’ll be playing for Barça next year,” he concluded.
