Frenkie de Jong’s contract renewal has become a priority for FC Barcelona, but the club is facing an unexpected obstacle.

De Jong’s current contract expires on 30 June 2026, and the Catalans want to extend the partnership. Both the player and the club wish to continue together, yet negotiations have stalled.

This is because the Dutch midfielder is in the middle of changing his agents this summer, and there have been some legal issues concerning the same.

Barcelona pressing De Jong to finalise renewal

Now, according to SPORT, Barcelona are keen to break the deadlock once and for all with regard to Frenkie de Jong’s renewal.

The Dutch midfielder is changing his representative this summer. De Jong has parted ways with his long-time agent, Ali Dursun, and it appears that his new advisor will be Pini Zahavi.

This change has not yet been made official, which is causing concern at Barcelona, as the Blaugrana are eager to finalise the renewal quickly.

De Jong has already expressed his desire to remain at Barça for two more seasons, meaning until 2028, and Barcelona agree with this. The problem lies in the fact that the club does not know with whom it should sit down to close the deal.

Barcelona want to resolve this matter as soon as possible. Time is working against the club, as De Jong would be free to negotiate with other clubs starting in January. This is a scenario that Deco and his technical staff want to avoid at all costs.

No longer for sale

The Barcelona sporting management and head coach Hansi Flick consider De Jong a key player and want him to stay in the project.

After a turbulent few summers when he was constantly linked with an exit, the player himself now enjoys a sense of stability within the team and feels comfortable, in addition to being one of the squad’s captains.

De Jong has notably improved since Hansi Flick took over as manager. Once he recovered from an ankle issue, he became a regular starter and is now an undisputed presence in a highly competitive position.

As such, efforts are being made to close De Jong’s renewal at the earliest possible, with Barcelona waiting for the change of agents to become official before they close the agreement.
