Barcelona reach agreement to renew 22-year-old homegrown star until 2031; announcement this week | OneFootball

In a major development, La Vanguardia reports that FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with Fermin Lopez over a new contract until the summer of 2031.

The 22-year-old La Masia graduate renewed his contract until 2029 in October 2024. However, his development, reflected in the ten goals and ten assists he has recorded this season, has quickly made those terms outdated.

As a result, just 15 months after securing his continuity, the player’s representatives and sporting director Deco have reached an agreement to extend his contract until 2031, with a 50% increase on his current salary.

Fermin’s release clause will also be doubled, from the current figure of €500 million to €1 billion.

This move at boardroom level is due in part to his strong performances and commitment to the team. In addition, elections are approaching, and the academy graduate is a player held in high regard by the Barcelona fan base.

Full confidence in Fermin despite Chelsea links

At Barcelona, there were never doubts about his potential, although Fermin did have some concerns last August, when Chelsea made an approach to sign him.

The player’s agents met with Deco and informed him of Chelsea’s interest. The sporting director replied that he would only authorise the move if Fermin requested to leave, and that the club would not let him go for less than €90 million.

Chelsea’s interest stalled at an offer of €40 million, and as Fermin never asked to leave, the club closed the matter.

Now, Fermin is happy at Barcelona. The 22-year-old midfielder is enjoying continuity in the team, having started 17 matches across all competitions, while he is also enjoying a rich vein of form.

And, an agreement has now been reached for him to prolong his stay at Barcelona until 2031, with a higher salary and a higher release clause amount.
