Barcelona reach agreement to sign Portuguese midfielder with immediate effect | OneFootball

Barcelona always have their finger on the pulse when it comes to the transfer market, and in the last 12-18 months, there has been a particular focus on younger players. The likes of Hamza Abdelkarim, Jesse Bisiwu and Juwensley Onstein have arrived at the Spotify Camp Nou, and soon, they will be joined by another top talent.

The latest player that Barcelona have been monitoring is Dany Freire. The Portuguese youth international has been plying his trade in Luxembourg in recent years, but over the summer, he was on trial with the club’s U18s, and he has done enough to secure a permanent stay in Catalonia.

Earlier this week, MD reported that Barcelona were working on signing Freire permanently from Luxembourg club CS Fola, and Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that an agreement has been reached for the attacking midfielder, whose 16th birthday is on Saturday, to join the Catalan club.

Who is Dany Freire, and why have Barcelona signed him?

Freire is an attacking midfielder, but he can also operate on the right wing and as a striker. He stands at almost 6ft tall, is right-footed and has been representing his country of birth Portugal at international level since 2025, having previous featured for Luxemburg, whom he is also eligible to represent.

Freire is considered to be a top talent within the realms of Portuguese football, despite having never played for a club in the country. His entire youth career has been spent in Luxembourg, first with Racing FC Union Luxembourg and then CS Fola, whom he will leave permanently to join Barcelona in the coming days.

Having sold the likes of Pablo Torre and Guille Fernandez (both to Mallorca) over the last 12 months, there is space for an attacking midfielder to come through the ranks at La Masia. Barcelona believe Freire could be that player, and Hansi Flick will surely be kept apprised of his situation, given how much he has monitored the academy since taking over as head coach in 2024.
