One of the standout performers of FC Barcelona this season has been Fermin Lopez. The midfielder, who came through La Masia, has exploded in terms of goal contributions so far this campaign, already on 20 G/A across all competitions.
The potential has always been there with Fermin. Ever since Xavi Hernandez picked him from the wilderness and made him a first-team regular, he has shown an excellent shot and an eye for a killer pass.
Since the turn of the year, Fermin has taken his game to an even higher level, scoring decisive goals and providing key assists in crucial matches. Last Wednesday, he shone in the Champions League, netting two stunning goals, including a thunderbolt from outside the box, which earned him another MVP accolade.
Fermin’s performances have not gone unnoticed, as several clubs are keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old midfield star. In response, according to SPORT, Barcelona has moved quickly to start talks over a contract renewal.
A meeting took place a few days ago between the club’s sporting management and Fermin’s agents, Xavier Gimenez and Joshua Barnett.
Fermin has a contract until 2029, and there is no urgency to renew. However, the club would like to offer a substantial salary increase and a potential two-year extension to secure a player they consider essential for their medium- and long-term plans while also warding off outside interest.
As for the player, there is no doubt that he wants to continue at Barcelona. In the summer window, he had the courage to turn down a move to Chelsea, which would definitely have meant a higher pay package.
The early talks with his agents have provided positive sensations for all parties. Fermin committing to a new contract would be excellent news for Barcelona fans.
It remains to be seen whether Fermin can maintain this rate of goals and assists until the end of the season. If he does, it will be an excellent season for Barcelona, and we will have to wait and see how things play out.
