Barcelona secure long-term future of highly-rated Spain youth captain – Romano | OneFootball

Barcelona have moved to secure the future of one of the most highly-rated defenders to emerge from La Masia in recent years, with Alex Campos set to commit his long-term future to the club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Barcelona defender has agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2029, with Barcelona also holding the option to extend the deal by a further year until 2030.

Barcelona reward Campos’ rapid development

Campos has enjoyed a strong rise through Barcelona’s academy, impressing across both Juvenil B and Barcelona Atletic with his composure on the ball and tactical maturity.

Although he began his development as a midfielder, the 18-year-old has successfully transitioned into central defence, where his reading of the game, distribution and physical profile have made him one of the academy’s most promising players.

His versatility is another quality Barcelona value highly. 

Alongside his preferred role at centre-back, Campos is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder or in central midfield when required, giving coaches greater tactical flexibility.

That progress has also been recognised internationally, with Campos captaining Spain’s Under-18 national team, strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s leading young defenders.

Already trained with the first team

The contract renewal follows a period of growing involvement around the first team, as Campos has already trained under Hansi Flick.

While there is no immediate expectation that he will become a regular first-team option this season, the opportunities to work with Flick and his coaching staff show just how highly the defender is regarded internally.

Securing Campos on a long-term deal is less about the present and more about the years ahead.

Barcelona view the teenager as a player with the technical qualities and positional intelligence required to succeed in the club’s style of play, and the new agreement gives him the stability to continue his development without uncertainty over his future.

The next challenge, thus, will be converting that potential into first-team opportunities.
