Barcelona set out clear parameters for midfielder signing

Barcelona are set for a busy end to the summer transfer window, with as many as three new signings possible. They are still pushing to bring in Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo, while there is now the possibility of a midfielder arriving as cover for Frenkie de Jong’s injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for at least a couple of months.

Hansi Flick will have Pedri, Gavi, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado as senior options for the first part of the new season, although the latter would leave if Barcelona were to receive an offer in the region of €40m. That would make a signing all the more likely, although the defining factor actually relates to de Jong’s situation.

According to Sport, Barcelona will only make a serious push to sign a new midfielder if de Jong’s conservative treatment does not go as planned. The club had wanted the Netherlands international to undergo surgery, but after choosing to respect their player’s wishes instead, they will closely inspect his progress over the coming weeks with a view to making a decision as to whether reinforcements are needed.

De Jong could return to action in weeks rather than months

If the conservative treatment works, Barcelona would expect de Jong to return to action in a few weeks, which would be a major boost. If this happens, it would also negate the need for a new signing, even if Casado leaves – given that the latter is unlikely to see much action at all during the upcoming 2026-27 season.

It remains to be seen whether a new midfielder does end up arriving at the Spotify Camp Nou in the coming weeks. Manchester City and Spain star Rodri is one that the club is monitoring, although he appears more likely to end up at Real Madrid at this stage.
