Barcelona star addresses future amid impending contract expiry

Before the summer transfer window opens at the start of July, Barcelona must address multiple situations that have become pressing. One of those involves Andreas Christensen, whose contract at the Spotify Camp Nou is due to expire at the end of the month.

Despite having barely featured over the last two seasons due to numerous injury blows, Barcelona are still counting on Christensen, as shown by the fact that he has been offered the chance to continue his career with the La Liga champions. But the caveat is that he will only be able to do so if he accepts a significant wage reduction, as this would allow the Catalans more space in their salary limit to register prospective new signings.

Christensen is yet to give a definitive response to Barcelona, but when he spoke to the media this week (via Sport), he made it clear that his priority is to remain part of Hansi Flick’s squad for at least one more season.

“Yes, this is all I can confirm (that I would like to stay at Barcelona). There is not much new. I don’t have much to share, but I hope to be able to do it soon. Everyone knows what I want and where my head is, so I hope everything falls into place soon.”

Christensen: I’m in a good moment right now

Christensen was speaking during Denmark’s training camp between friendlies against DR Congo and Ukraine. Given that he will not be at the World Cup this summer, he will have time to make a decision on his future, but for now, he’s looking forward to getting minutes under his belt for his nation.

“It’s been a long five months, but I feel like I’m in a good moment right now. These international matches can help me feel better during the summer.”

It makes a lot of sense for Barcelona to only renew Christensen under certain conditions. They need to free up salary space for the likes of Bernardo Silva to sign, and cutting back on the Dane’s wages would certainly be a massive help.
