A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has admitted that members of the club’s board were previously keen to sanction his sale.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Midfielder De Jong is for his part of course seeing the long-term speculation surrounding his future in Catalunya’s capital put to bed once and for all.

This comes after the former Ajax man this week put pen to paper on a new long-term contract.

De Jong has long reestablished himself as a pivotal figure in Barcelona’s XI, considered one of the first names on the team sheet of Hansi Flick.

As alluded to above, though, in the not-so-distant past, the Camp Nou hierarchy were more than ready to sanction his sale.

Speaking during an interview with El País, as cited by Diario Sport, this week, De Jong confirmed that whilst struggling for money, several Blaugrana board members ‘wanted to sell me’:

“I have always been clear that I wanted to stay at Barcelona. I’ve always been happy, with the team, with playing here. There was a time when there was more pressure, as there was also another time when there were people at the club who wanted to sell me to make money. I think it was in the summer of 2023 or 2022, I don’t remember it well now.”
