Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo is hoping for more international success this summer, as he prepares for the 2026 World Cup with Spain. But before doing so, he has looked back on 2024, when he helped La Roja win Euro 2024 and also sealed a dream return to the Catalan club.

In an interview with MD, Olmo opened up on the circumstances surrounding his return to Barcelona, whom he was with at academy level. He explained that he was unaware of a move being in the works until after Euro 2024 ended.

“After the European Championship. When they told me: ‘Dani, we didn’t want to say anything to you while you were focused, but you should know that Barça are coming strong and this time they are really coming’. That’s when I believed it. And I would tell you that Deco’s visit to Leipzig was when I actually saw the real interest and that they loved me.”

Olmo also opened up on life as a Barcelona player. He revealed the inner workings to be very family-like, although he also admitted that the pressure to win can be overpowering at times.

“How the club works from the inside is another world. On the outside it is all very big, very “wow”, but on the inside it is all very close and very familiar. There are people who have been there all their lives. To give you an example, Carlos Naval. But also the physios, the kit men… It’s like a small family and they are there for you for everything.

“The demand of having to win everything. It’s the hardest thing, but it’s also something you get used to. You know that you have to always be at the foot of the cannon, that you have to perform. The least that people expect, what all Barça fans expect, is to win. That demand is one of the most difficult things, but it also depends on the personality of each one and the challenges they set themselves during the season. And the fact is that the demands that the Culés and the club put on us, we also put on ourselves as players.”

Olmo was asked about the possibility of leaving in the summer, with MD referring to reported interest in his services from beaten Champions League finalists Arsenal.

“The Catalans can rest assured. For my part, there is nothing to say.”

Olmo addressed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, while he was also asked about the possible arrival of Julian Alvarez.

“In the end, the best players have to play for Barça. Gordon is a signing who is going to raise the level of the team. From here we welcome him, obviously, and wish him a good World Cup, although not against Spain. They are world-class names. Everything that comes to add and to raise the level of the team will always be welcome.
