Last month, Robert Lewandowski became a hot topic in international football after suddenly announcing that he would not play for the Polish national team anymore after a falling out with coach Michal Probierz.

Although Lewandowski ultimately had the last laugh, with Probierz stepping down, his prospects with the Polish national team appear to be heading into uncharted waters.

Lewandowksi considering international retirement

As reported by SPORT, it appears Lewandowski is considering retiring from the Polish national team in the near future.

Citing Polish journalist Bartosz Wlazlak, the report claims that Lewandowski might retire from the national team should Poland fail to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Poles are currently sitting third in Group G with two wins and one loss in three matches. They are behind the Netherlands and Finland in their respective group.

From these teams, the leader will directly qualify for the FIFA World Cup, while the second-placed team will play in the playoffs.

As things stand, Poland are third in the group, though the team will have ample opportunities to inch up to at least the second spot.

Lewandowski, for his part, is expected to return to the national team fold when Poland restart their qualification campaign in September.

The Eastern European nation is slated to face the Netherlands and Finland, two games that may decide the outcome of the final group standings.

Poland are also bracing themselves for a new coach, with local media widely reporting Adam Nawalka to become the next boss.

Nawalka was the manager of Poland between 2013 to 2018. His most recent job saw him coach Lech Poznan before he eventually left the club in 2019.

Having managed personalities like Lewandowski in the past, Nawalka could be a prudent pick, as far as the Polish national team is concerned.
