Clubs from Saudi Arabia have once again been recruiting top players from Europe in the transfer window, with FC Barcelona also losing one of their stars to the cash-rich Saudi Pro League.

Indeed, Inigo Martinez left the Catalan giants to sign for Al Nassr during the summer window, in a move which came as quite a surprise.

However, it is now being reported that Saudi Arabian teams had their sights on another experienced player from Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski rejected Saudi Arabia

Indeed, according to 365Scores (h/t SPORT), Lewandowski was offered an enormous contract worth €100 million annually, with additional incentives and bonuses, to leave Barcelona for Saudi Arabia.

However, the same outlet states that the 37-year-old superstar turned down the lucrative offer, with his agent requesting postponement of negotiations due to the striker’s wish to remain at Barcelona for now.

It is further claimed that Lewandowski’s entourage promised to review the Saudi project in the near future.

A source from the Saudi Public Investment Fund told the outlet about the attempt to sign the Pole, saying:

“Lewandowski was on the list of potential names that the recruitment committee was looking to bring to the Saudi league, as they sought to sign several international stars during this summer’s transfer window.

“The player was offered to major clubs in the Roshn League, where he was enthusiastically received by Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, who have prioritised him on their transfer list, with Uruguayan Darwin Nunez as an alternative option.”

Following Lewandowski’s decision to reject the offer and delay talks, Al-Hilal finally moved to sign Darwin Nunez from Liverpool to lead their attack.

As for Lewandowski, for now, the Polish striker remains at Barcelona, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, it remains to be seen if this one turns out to be his last at the club or whether he is offered an extension.
