Barcelona teenage defender wanted on loan by two clubs – report

FC Barcelona have a number of talented La Masia players on the verge of breaking through into the first team who may not get enough minutes to justify their development at the club.

Jofre Torrents is one such example. The 19-year-old Spanish left-back was part of Hansi Flick’s plans for pre-season last summer and was even given his debut.

He has joined Flick’s first team yet again in the lead-up to the 2026-27 season, and it does look like he might be loaned out to aid his development.

According to AS, Barça believe Torrents has outgrown Barça Atletic, who play in the fourth division, and now needs experience at senior level.

Racing Santander and Ajax are competing for the highly rated 19-year-old left-back, and the Catalan club have an important decision to make.

Barcelona want a loan, not a sale

The plan is for Torrents to leave temporarily rather than permanently. His contract runs until 2028 after he renewed last summer, showing that Barcelona still have faith in his long-term potential.

Torrents made 15 appearances for Barça Atletic last season despite still being eligible for the Juvenil side. He was also rewarded with first-team opportunities, playing three times in La Liga and once in the Copa del Rey.

His path into Flick’s squad, however, is currently crowded. Alejandro Balde and Gerard Martin are already available on the left, and Joao Cancelo is a likely addition too.

Racing and Ajax offer different pathways

Racing are searching for a left-back, and sporting director Chema Aragon is interested in Torrents. They are in La Liga this season, which makes this a very good loan for the La Masia gem.

Ajax are also pushing for a loan, although the Dutch club have recently signed Caio Henrique for the same position.

Barcelona will therefore need to consider which destination can provide Torrents with the clearest route to consistent minutes.

There could also be an interesting connection with Barça’s interest in Salinas. Racing want his full €16 million release clause, a figure the Blaugrana are unwilling to pay, and Torrents could help sweeten the deal.

Barça must prioritise his development

For Barcelona, the decision should ultimately come down to playing time. Torrents has already shown enough promise to enter Flick’s first-team environment, but another season without regular senior football could slow his progress.

A carefully chosen loan would allow Barça to maintain control over another La Masia talent while giving him the challenge he now needs.

Whether that opportunity comes in Santander or Amsterdam, the objective should be clear: Torrents must play. It remains to be seen what the club decides is the best course of action.
