Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas is a player Barcelona have been deeply interested in signing for a while now, and they even secured an agreement with the player over a move not too long ago.

Matters, however, began falling apart when Barcelona and Racing Santander began facing disagreements over the transfer fee and how the interpretation of his release clause changed after his parent club’s promotion.

Racing argue that their promotion to the first division automatically increases Salinas’ release clause from €8 million to €16 million, but the Catalans stand by the idea that the promotion would not officially be valid until the new season began on July 1st.

The critical day has passed

With June now ending and July upon us, however, there remains no doubt over the situation or release clause of Salinas as reported by AS.

The defender is now officially a member of a first-division club, and his release clause is thus set at €16 million without any speck of doubt.

Racing, thus, continue to stand firm that they will not let the player go for a dime less than his release clause which they believe is fair. Moreover, they have a history of standing firm on release clauses in previous transfers.

Robert Gonzalez, their communications director, even made that clear in a recent media interaction.

“We don’t haggle over key players, and Jorge is one of them. They had to pay the buyout clause for Peque, Jeremy,” he said.

Barcelona, thus, must up their budget if they are to land the defender this summer. The €16 million is not atrociously high, but will make the board have second doubts given the player’s credentials so far.

Multiple clubs interested

Barcelona are not the only side interested in Salinas and the player has attracted interest from several top European powerhouses.

Atletico Madrid, PSG, Newcastle United and FC Porto have all shown interest in the Racing star’s signing, and the €16 million release clause being official will be news to all of them.

For Joan Laporta and Co., one option now is to include a youth player in the deal and improve the financial terms, although it remains to be seen if Racing are open to such an accommodation. Xavi Espart is one such option.
