Barcelona’s turbulent summer took another twist last week as their high-profile pursuit of Nico Williams dramatically collapsed. As revealed by The Athletic, the 22-year-old opted to remain at Athletic Club, signing a 10-year contract, after Barcelona refused to meet the demands of his representatives. It’s a setback that forces sporting director Deco back to the drawing board, although in truth, the club’s gaze has already turned towards a familiar name: Luis Diaz.
Nico Williams had been identified as a marquee target for Barcelona. With his release clause a set figure, it offered the Catalan giants a rare opportunity to secure a top-tier talent without a prolonged negotiation. However, the deal unravelled over a pivotal contract demand.
As The Athletic reported: “His camp wanted Barcelona to include an exit clause in his proposed contract to allow him to leave for free if he signed and then the club failed to register him by the start of La Liga. Sporting director Deco rejected their request, and that triggered Williams’ decision to remain with his boyhood club in Bilbao.”
That insistence on security speaks volumes about the current financial uncertainty at Camp Nou. Players, now more than ever, are wary of putting pen to paper without assurances. For Barcelona, this was a self-inflicted miss and a brutal reminder that they’re still operating under a cloud of administrative fragility.
Deco may have missed out on the exciting Williams, but the club’s preferred target, as it turns out, remains unchanged. The Athletic confirms: “Club sources have said Diaz is the biggest focus in the sporting directors’ department.”
At 28, Diaz represents a more experienced, dynamic option. The Colombian’s ability to deliver immediately has caught Deco’s eye, particularly with Hansi Flick keen to build around players who can hit the ground running. However, his availability is complicated by Liverpool’s situation, with the Premier League club navigating its own transitional period.

Barcelona are reportedly cautious, aware that “the current delicate situation at Liverpool” could dictate when or if a formal offer becomes realistic. Unlike with Williams, no release clause exists, and any negotiation would be intricate and financially draining.
With Diaz front and centre, the name of Marcus Rashford has also emerged. Although lower down the list, The Athletic notes that “Barcelona are aware Rashford is keen to come to Camp Nou” and that “it could happen on favourable terms” due to Manchester United’s willingness to sell.
This is a classic Barcelona manoeuvre — tracking a high-value player quietly, ready to pounce should the opportunity align with their financial flexibility later in the window. For now, though, he remains more of a possibility than a probability.
While some players arrive, others are on the way out. Sergi Dominguez and Noah Darvich have already left, bringing in just over €2 million. Pau Prim’s move to Al Sadd signals the departure of a once highly-touted La Masia graduate. Roony Bardghji’s signing from FC Copenhagen adds a different profile to the attacking pool, with Flick set to assess him during pre-season.
Decisions on Pablo Torre and Pau Victor are imminent, while a more unexpected call could come in goal. As The Athletic suggests, “there is the expectation that Flick will have a private chat with Marc-Andre ter Stegen to inform the goalkeeper he is not expected to be a starter next season.” The 33-year-old captain could be on the way out as a result.
For Culers, this latest update from The Athletic sends a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. Nico Williams staying at Athletic hurts — no doubt about that. A young Spanish star, full of flair, who would have lit up the left wing at Camp Nou for years. But his contract demands reveal something more troubling: players still doubt whether Barça can guarantee the basics, like registration.
That’s a gut punch, but the rebound could be spectacular. Luis Diaz is the sort of forward we dream of at Barcelona. Direct, passionate, tireless — he feels like a natural for Flick’s aggressive, quick-transition style. The fact Deco views him as the top priority is reassuring. If the club can manage a deal with Liverpool, this could be one of the defining signings of the window.
As for Rashford, it’s hard not to get excited. Sure, he’s inconsistent, but there’s a world-class player in there somewhere. If Deco plays the waiting game and strikes a deal on Barcelona’s terms, it might be a masterstroke.
Seeing the back of some fringe players is no big deal. What matters now is that Roony Bardghji steps up, and we finally get the depth this squad has needed for too long. Pre-season with Flick will be telling. If he’s bold, ruthless and smart, this might be the start of something special.
