FC Barcelona’s defensive planning may ultimately depend on Ronald Araujo, with the club prepared to consider a sale if the Uruguayan decides he wants to leave.

The 27-year-old remains under contract until 2031, and Barcelona are not actively pushing him towards the exit. However, his position in Hansi Flick’s hierarchy is no longer as secure as it once was.

According to AS, Barca would not block Araujo’s departure if the player requested a move and an acceptable offer arrived.

The club still value his leadership, experience and physical qualities, but competition in central defence has increased significantly.

Pau Cubarsi is firmly established, Eric Garcia remains highly trusted by Flick, Gerard Martin continues to grow as a left-sided option and Andreas Christensen has just renewed.

That leaves Araujo fighting for a place in a crowded defensive group.

The report claims Flick does not currently view him as an option at right-back either, which further narrows his path to regular minutes.

A conversation between Araujo and the coach could therefore prove decisive. The defender remains committed to Barcelona and is prepared to compete, but he also wants to feel important within the project.

If Flick makes it clear that his role will be limited, the situation could change quickly.

Barcelona’s next defensive move may depend on his future

For Barca, Araujo’s decision could have a direct impact on the market.

The club are currently satisfied with their centre-back options and do not consider another signing an immediate priority. However, a significant departure could reopen that discussion and create room for a replacement.

That is why Araujo may become the key figure in Barcelona’s defensive planning over the coming weeks.

From a sporting perspective, losing him would remove a unique profile. Few defenders in the squad can match his speed, strength and ability in direct duels.

At the same time, keeping a high-level centre-back who feels like a fifth-choice option could create problems of its own.

Barcelona are not forcing anything. The next move largely belongs to Araujo, and once his role is clarified with Flick, the direction of the club’s defensive plans could become much clearer.
