The 2026 FIFA World Cup is slowly entering the stages where every result feels like an event on its own.

The Round-of-16 games kicked off last night as teams now look to book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Morocco took on co-hosts Canada in the first game of the night, and the African nation managed to get a 3-0 win over their opposition.

It was a game in which the scoreline was very flattering towards the AFCON winners, with the actual picture being much more in favour of Canada.

It was football in its most beautiful and cruel version, as Jesse Marsch’s side dominated the game throughout, only to see Morocco be more clinical in the moments that mattered.

The second game of the night saw France take on Paraguay, who had reached this stage by defeating Germany on penalties.

The South American side resorted to every dirty trick in the book to stop Les Bleus from playing football, but still managed to escape without a single yellow card.

France were barely given any rhythm, but they did what champion teams do: fought it out. Eventually, a Kylian Mbappe penalty was enough to give them a slender lead.

From a Barcelona perspective, the only player involved last night was Jules Kounde, so let us see how he fared.

Jules Kounde vs Paraguay

Jules Kounde’s World Cup knockout night was not glamorous, but it was exactly the kind of performance Barcelona supporters should appreciate.

France beat Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16, with Mbappe scoring the winner from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.

For Kounde, this was a match built on concentration. Paraguay were compact, aggressive and happy to disrupt the rhythm, so France needed their defenders to stay calm while pushing the game into the opposition half.

That is where Kounde’s role mattered. He and former Barcelona defender Lucas Digne pushed high, combining for nine tackles and 10 duels won, helping France pin Paraguay back for long spells.

It was not the kind of display that produces viral clips. Kounde did not score, assist or dominate the post-match narrative.

However, in a tight knockout game, his job was to keep his side secure, support the attack and avoid giving Paraguay easy transition moments.

Kounde has often been judged at club level through the right-back debate: whether he is more useful centrally or out wide.

He may not offer the natural attacking flair of a pure full-back, but he gives structure. He can defend one-v-one, step high, recover quickly and help his team keep territorial control.

France’s dominance also tells the story of his positioning. They completed 568 passes to Paraguay’s 183 and made 87 final-third entries, which meant their defenders had to operate almost like midfielders for long stretches.

When a team has so much of the ball, one loose action from a defender can open the whole pitch. Kounde handled that risk well, keeping France stable even as Paraguay tried to turn the game into a fight.

It was yet another positive night for the Barcelona defender at the World Cup, where he has looked like his old self after an indifferent club season.

Kounde continues to be important for Didier Deschamps and France, and rightly so, but perhaps more importantly, he has also shown Barça fans that he can continue to be important for them in the upcoming season.
