Despite their precarious economic conditions, FC Barcelona have brought in some very high-profile players to their team in the last few years. Meanwhile, they have also missed out on some players whom they wanted in their team.
One such player who has been linked with the Catalan side in the last several years has been the Manchester City star, Bernardo Silva. At times, it was the reluctance of Pep Guardiola to part with him, while at others, it was the financial limitations of Barcelona, that kept him from joining the Blaugrana side.
Now, the situation has taken a decisive turn. According to SPORT, the roles have reversed, as it is now Bernardo Silva himself who is actively pushing to secure a move to Barcelona ahead of next season.
A key factor in this development is that the Portuguese international is set to become a free agent from June 30, a detail that significantly improves his accessibility for the Blaugrana side.
The midfielder is determined to make Barcelona his next destination and wants his last major contract as a player to be with the Catalans. In this pursuit, he has a very useful ally, i.e., his agent, Jorge Mendes, who has already begun working to convince the club’s decision makers.
However, despite the player’s willingness and favorable contractual situation, Barcelona are not fully convinced for now. There are both sporting and strategic doubts surrounding a potential move.
Silva will turn 32 next August, and his preferred role on the pitch overlaps with key players like Pedri, Fermim, Olmo, and Lamine Yamal, making it difficult to guarantee him a central role in the team.
At the same time, Mendes believes his €27 million-rated client’s versatility, technical quality, and physical condition would allow him to thrive under Flick. There is also an internal view that Silva could provide valuable depth and serve as a natural alternative to Pedri, helping manage the heavy workload the young midfielder has carried in recent seasons.
Talks between the parties are ongoing, with proposals already discussed. However, Deco has asked for patience as he continues to define Barcelona’s broader plans for the upcoming campaign, particularly in attack and defence, where several uncertainties remain.
The club’s financial situation and La Liga’s strict regulations continue to limit their room for maneuver, making every decision in the market a calculated one. Meanwhile, Silva is willing to wait for Barcelona, despite receiving lucrative offers from the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Galatasaray.
For now, the Portuguese star remains focused on fulfilling a long-held dream. With free agency giving him greater control over his future, the coming months will be decisive in determining whether Bernardo Silva finally gets to wear the famous blue and garnet jersey.
