FC Barcelona took another big step towards retaining their La Liga title as they defeated Getafe 2-0 away at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

With Real Madrid having been held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis on Friday, Barça now have an 11-point advantage at the top of the standings. And it is only a matter of time before their status as champions is confirmed.

Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford were the two scorers for Barcelona today, but it was a team performance as Pedri dictated proceedings from midfield and Pau Cubarsi was very solid in defence.

Cubarsi happy with performance and win

Speaking to the media after the game, Cubarsi expressed his happiness at the result, admitting that it puts them in a very strong position in the title race.

“I’m happy the team’s doing well. A crucial match to win and put us in a good position in the league. We still have to give it our all,” said the 19-year-old prodigy.

On the possibility of getting a guard of honour from Real Madrid in the Clasico next month, Cubarsi just insisted that the Blaugrana’s objective is to win the title at the earliest possible.

“We want to win the league as soon as possible,” he declared.

Talking about the tackle he made to recover the ball, which led to the move for Fermin’s opening goal, Cubarsi explained:

“We knew we had to be very alert to the counter-attack. I managed to win the ball back well, and when there’s space, we’ve got some excellent passers.”

On another key intervention he made to stop Getafe from scoring the equaliser, the youngster added:

“We lacked solidity there, but I managed to disrupt them. That gave us some breathing space to go for the second on the counter-attack.”

Talking about his physical development as well as his evolution as a key figure in this Barcelona setup, the La Masia graduate remarked:

“As the years go by, you have to keep gaining experience. I started as a kid, and I’m evolving. Everything’s happening very quickly; I’m still taking it all in.”

Barcelona have now managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets in the same week. On whether they had changed their style and adopted more caution in their approach, the centre-back replied:

“We’re fully committed to the philosophy, tweaking a few essential things.”

Regarding the number of matches he has already played for Barcelona despite being only 19 years old, Cubarsi remarked:

“I’m relaxed with my family; I don’t want to look at the numbers too much.”
