Barcelona made a serious effort to sign Julian Alvarez before ultimately accepting that the operation had become financially impossible.
For several weeks, the Argentine striker was viewed as the dream attacking signing for Barcelona in the post-Robert Lewandowski era.
The club believed Alvarez had the perfect profile to lead the next attacking evolution under Hansi Flick thanks to his intensity, mobility and tactical intelligence.
Now, fresh reports from Ruben Uria have revealed the details of Barcelona’s first concrete proposal to Atletico Madrid in an attempt to bring the World Cup winner to the Spotify Camp Nou.
According to the journalist, Barcelona offered €70 million alongside Ferran Torres as part of the operation.

The Catalan side hoped that including the Spanish forward would help lower Atletico’s financial demands and make the transfer more realistic under the club’s current economic situation.
However, the proposal was rejected almost immediately for two important reasons.
Firstly, Atletico Madrid considered the overall valuation too low, as the club views Alvarez as one of the pillars of their future project and believes any departure should only happen if an enormous offer arrives.
Notably, Atletico are said to value the Argentine at around €150 million, with the club believing that amount would be necessary to finance a new sporting project if the striker eventually leaves.
Secondly, Ferran Torres himself had no interest in being included in the deal.

The Spanish attacker remains committed to Barcelona and has no intention of leaving the club this summer despite uncertainty surrounding his long-term role.
What makes the failed operation even more interesting is the fact that Alvarez was open to joining Barcelona.
The Argentine striker has been heavily linked with a possible exit in recent months amid growing doubts regarding Atletico Madrid’s current sporting direction.
Reports suggest the player is unconvinced about the club’s ability to consistently compete for the titles and was interested in exploring a move elsewhere.
Despite that openness from the player’s side, Barcelona simply could not find a formula capable of convincing Atletico Madrid to negotiate seriously.
