FC Barcelona’s main objective for the summer transfer window is to sign a top-level centre-back, with Alessandro Bastoni identified as the leading target.

Alongside this potential addition, the Blaugrana will continue relying on Eric Garcia and Pau Cubarsi, both of whom have become irreplaceable members of the squad under Hansi Flick.

Gerard Martin, meanwhile, has emerged as a reliable option as a left-sided centre-back this season, repaying the trust shown by Hansi Flick.

It leaves Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen as the odd men out in the centre-back position heading into next season.

Providing an update on the club’s plans for the centre-back position, SPORT now reports that, at present, and barring any unexpected developments, the continuity of Araujo is considered assured.

The situation is less clear for Andreas Christensen. The Danish defender has received a renewal offer on significantly reduced terms and must decide in the coming weeks whether to accept or leave the club as a free agent.

Araujo’s future secure

As per the report, Barcelona maintain full confidence in Araujo and are satisfied with his return to form in recent games, viewing him as a key figure for both the present and the future.

His situation is viewed as a positive development. The defender has fully recovered from the issues that kept him out for more than a month, and Barça are pleased with his performances. His versatility and unique attributes compared to other defenders make him a valuable asset.

Both Flick and the sporting department are determined to retain him. The Catalans have no intention of listening to offers unless the Uruguayan himself expresses a desire to leave, something that is not currently under consideration.

Uncertainty with Christensen

Christensen’s case is different. The Dane has spent most of the season sidelined due to physical problems. Barcelona have offered him an extension as recognition of his professionalism, but under significantly reduced financial conditions.

The proposed deal includes a lower fixed salary supplemented by performance-based incentives linked to appearances.

This would place him lower in the club’s wage structure, and it remains uncertain whether he will accept, particularly as he could receive more attractive offers elsewhere once his contract expires.

Whether he stays or leaves, the reduction in his salary would have a positive impact on the club’s wage bill, providing greater flexibility for future operations.

Barcelona will allow Christensen full freedom to decide his future, but expect clarity within a defined timeframe.
