Michy Batshuayi joined Eintracht Frankfurt in January to boost the Eagles' hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The Belgian spoke to bundesliga.com about his switch to Deutsche Bank Park, replacing Omar Marmoush and more...
bundesliga.com: Firstly Michy, welcome back to the Bundesliga. How does it feel to be back, and why Frankfurt?
Michy Batshuayi: "I'm very happy to be playing in the Bundesliga again. Frankfurt is, of course, a big city, and this is a very big club that is currently having a very good season. For me, it's a great challenge, and I'm looking forward to my time here."bundesliga.com: What excites you about this club?Batshuayi: "In the past, I've always played for clubs with passionate supporters, and I believe I'm in the right place to continue that here. I've now seen the stadium and the fans, and I'm truly excited to be able to play here. This was the right moment for me to take on a new challenge, and I believe this was the perfect opportunity for me.”bundesliga.com: You didn't play too much towards the end of your time with Galatasaray. Is that a reason for your move here?Batshuayi: "Yes, of course, every player wants to play as much as possible and score goals. I was promised more playing time there, which in the end was not the case. Here, I have received a lot of trust, a lot of love, and the feeling that the coach really wants to develop the players. He invests a lot of time in developing the guys, and that's why I'm very happy to be here.”
bundesliga.com: Of course, this is not your first time in the Bundesliga. Seven years ago, at Borussia Dortmund, you played 10 games and scored seven goals. What do you remember about that time?Batshuayi: “Yes, it was a good spell for me back then, and I was very effective. Unfortunately, I got injured quickly, and then the situation became a bit more complicated. But yes, I missed the Bundesliga, and that's why I'm even happier to be back here. I hope that I can give a lot to the fans and the club."bundesliga.com: At Frankfurt, you're playing with two former Dortmund teammates in Mahmoud Dahoud and Mario Götze. How does it feel to link up with some familiar faces? Batshuayi: “Yes, I was happy to see the guys here again. They immediately helped me during my first steps at the club, but not only them - the whole team welcomed me very well. I'm just grateful, and also thankful for the trust that was placed in me, which made the transfer possible. I just want to repay this trust with my performances on the pitch.”bundesliga.com: A lot of Frankfurt's success this year was down to Omar Marmoush, your predecessor. What is it like to replace someone who had that impact?Batshuayi: “I would say that everyone writes their own story. Omar is Omar, and I am Michy. I just want to help the team as much as possible, score as many goals as I can, and simply push the team as best as I can.”
bundesliga.com: How much did the prospect of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League draw you to Frankfurt?Batshuayi: “Of course, the Champions League is the goal for every player, but that was not necessarily the most important thing for me when I arrived. However, I immediately noticed, even during training sessions, that we are very hungry, that the team trains with great intensity, and that we push each other. We all want to go in the same direction and achieve something together."bundesliga.com: This weekend, you play against the league leaders, Bayern Munich. Frankfurt, though, are flying high in third too - how much are you looking forward to this game?Batshuayi: "We're always highly motivated and in the coming days we will be even more motivated. It'll be a good game and in the end, it's 11 against 11 on the pitch. Anything is possible.”
