Bayer Leverkusen have agreed a €30m deal to sign Napoli left-back Miguel Gutiérrez as Alejandro Grimaldo’s replacement, and only final formalities appear to remain before a Bundesliga switch.
According to Get German Football News, Napoli have accepted the offer and the 25-year-old has a verbal agreement with Leverkusen. The Spanish defender is on the verge of heading to Germany.
Leverkusen had already lodged an official bid while seeking cover for Grimaldo. Earlier reports suggested Napoli might take €20m to €25m, but Leverkusen increased their proposal to secure the Spanish Olympic gold medallist for Carles Martínez’s squad.
Gutiérrez is viewed as the natural attacking successor to Grimaldo, who joined Atlético Madrid earlier this summer. A former Real Madrid academy player, he moved to Napoli from Girona in August 2025 and is under contract until 2030. He made 28 Serie A appearances in his first season, recording one goal and one assist.
Before Italy, he emerged as one of La Liga’s most productive attacking full-backs at Girona, contributing six goals and 18 assists in 113 outings. His progressive passing, crossing and knack for drifting into central areas should suit Martínez’s plans. Leverkusen had also looked at Marseille defender Facundo Medina, whose profile is more defensive.
An official announcement is expected once contractual and medical checks are completed.
