During the summer transfer window, there was a lot of talk about Barcelona looking for a new left-back, depending on their finances.

Alejandro Grimaldo’s name was frequently linked with the club, and many expected a move.

However, Barcelona ended the window with three signings – two wingers and a goalkeeper – and no left-back joined the squad.

Grimaldo, who started his career at FC Barcelona, has now spoken about the situation, offering some clarity.

“There was perhaps a chance to go to Barça, but it didn’t happen,” Grimaldo revealed, confirming that a move to his old club was considered but ultimately didn’t materialise.

Addressing links with Atletico Madrid

The 30-year-old also addressed links with Atletico de Madrid, saying, “There have been conversations with Atlético de Madrid, but as you can see, practically nothing has happened.”

He reflected further on his options, stating, “Did I have the option of going between Madrid and Barcelona?

“There are always options and things are discussed, but if they don’t work out in the end, it’s because they weren’t meant to be.”

Grimaldo, now a key figure at Bayer Leverkusen, added,

“We have to face the challenge of being here (at Bayer Leverkusen) with a lot of motivation,” showing his focus on performing at his current club despite the transfer speculation.

Barcelona’s left-back situation

While Grimaldo did not join, Barcelona’s left-back options have strengthened this season.

Hansi Flick has taken a careful approach, refusing to name a clear favourite between Alejandro Balde and Gerard Martin.

The manager has praised both players and views the competition positively, believing it will push the team forward.

This balance shows Barcelona’s strength in squad depth, especially in defence. Even without signing a new left-back, the club has options that give Flick flexibility in matches.
