Bayer Leverkusen ‘to consider move for’ Leon Goretzka on free this summer | OneFootball

Sport Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen are interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer this summer. The 30-year-old has already announced he will leave the Bundesliga leaders when his contract expires.

Leverkusen view Goretzka as a leadership replacement for Granit Xhaka, who moved to Sunderland last summer. A switch within the Bundesliga could help a player who may have been unfairly sidelined at the Allianz Arena and can still contribute at a high level.

Any deal would be difficult to pull off. Goretzka earns a high salary in Munich, a figure Leverkusen would struggle to match.

The player is currently leaning towards England and has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United. Clubs in Spain and Italy are also in the frame.

Stylistically, Aleix Garcia is seen as the natural on-pitch successor to Xhaka. In terms of trophies and experience, no one has filled the void since the Swiss midfielder left.

Leverkusen’s midfield options at present are Garcia, Robert Andrich, Equi Fernandez, Exequiel Palacios and Ibrahim Maza.
