The heated debate about the video assistant referee has reached a new level of escalation following the 2-2 draw between Union Berlin and FC Bayern. The reason for this is the disallowed goal in the 9th minute – and the criticism is now also getting louder from prominent figures.

Iconic coach Peter Neururer was not sparing with clear words in his Wettfreunde column: „The fact that this goal was disallowed by the VAR is a scandal for me. It has nothing whatsoever to do with offside and justice and similar things.“

„Not perceptible, but pro-Bayern“

The supposed goal by Ilyas Ansah was taken back after VAR intervention due to a wafer-thin offside position. On the TV images, the difference could only be seen with a calibrated line – practically invisible to the human eye.

Neururer commented smugly: „Not perceptible, but in Bayern’s favor. Okay, someone who isn’t necessarily a Bayern fan would say that, but let’s leave it at that.“

Union coach Steffen Baumgart didn’t mince his words on Sky after the final whistle: „The first goal is a goal. To go for offside because of those five millimetres, someone has been drinking varnish. I’m sorry.“

Neururer sees the scene as a symptom of a bigger problem: „We introduced VAR in 2017 and since then we’ve had discussions every matchday – a thousand times more than before. We wanted more justice, and what have we got? Justice or injustice has remained. Things are uncovered that don’t necessarily need to be uncovered. Does that help the sport, yes or no? I say: it doesn’t help the sport.“

Neururer on Bayern: „Question of motivation“

The cult coach also had a clear opinion on the course of the game in sporting terms: „Absolutely fair. Union were clearly better in the first half, Bayern overslept a little – that’s a question of motivation.“

Nevertheless, he showed understanding with regard to the pressure on Munich: „Paris Saint-Germain during the week and then Union. You can live with it, you have to live with it. However, Bayern’s quality is sufficient, then they won’t lose a game like this.“
