Even two days after the bitter Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern’s refereeing performance continues to cause discussion

The disappointment over the Champions League semi-final exit continues to run deep at FC Bayern, and ahead of the Bundesliga match at VfL Wolfsburg, sporting director Christoph Freund has now also commented on the controversial decisions in the second leg against Paris Saint-Germain

The Austrian made it clear that Munich were not satisfied with several situations: „Basically, it’s still a big disappointment two nights later. It felt good, we were convinced we could do it. But then everything has to fit together and it’s the little things that decide,“ Freund explained at the press conference

The numerous discussions surrounding referee Joao Pinheiro in particular continue to preoccupy Bayern, with Freund emphasizing that, from his point of view, it was striking how many situations were interpreted against the German record champions

„There is a lot of discussion about the referee, there are many reports – and it’s always best when you don’t have to discuss so many decisions, but talk about the soccer,“ said the Bayern sports director

Freund was then particularly clear in his assessment of the refereeing: „It was noticeable that there were many decisions that were not in our favor.“

The 48-year-old indirectly confirmed the impression of many Bayern players, who had already criticized the referee immediately after the game

Laimer already complained after the game

Bayern star Konrad Laimer, among others, was visibly frustrated after the 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. The Austrian was particularly upset about several handball situations and the general line taken by the Portuguese referee

„It’s strange,“ Laimer told DAZN after the game, expressing his irritation at the influence of the fourth official, among other things

Freund also made it clear that FC Bayern would deal with the issue internally and with UEFA. „We are always in contact with UEFA, it should always be the goal of all clubs and UEFA that the focus is not on the decisions, but on the soccer. Otherwise it’s just a shame,“ explained the sporting director

Despite the annoyance, Munich now want to focus on their sporting tasks again. After missing out on a place in the Champions League final, FC Bayern now have the Bundesliga final spurt to look forward to.
