For Max Eberl, this summer’s transfer window could be a turning point. The FC Bayern sporting director remains under internal scrutiny and is fighting for a long-term future with the record champions. Now, for the first time, President Herbert Hainer has publicly spoken positively about the 52-year-old’s work.

By the time the supervisory board meets after the transfer window closes, at the latest, a decision is expected on Eberl’s future at FC Bayern. Although his contract runs through 2027, there are differing opinions within the club’s leadership regarding his tenure so far.

Consequently, the pressure on the sporting director to deliver results this summer was immense. In addition to signing new players, the focus was primarily on sales, contract extensions, and improving the club’s financial balance.

Eberl Delivers on Transfers and Sales

Eberl made a strong statement early on with the signings of Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown. Both transfers were finalized before the start of the World Cup and cost a combined total of just over 50 million euros.

At the same time, the sporting director managed to ease the strain on the salary structure. The departures of Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro created significant financial breathing room. Added to this are transfer proceeds from the sales of Alexander Nübel, Noel Aseko, and Lovro Zvonarek. Revenue from resale clauses and FIFA compensation payments have also further improved Munich’s income recently.

Although some personnel decisions are still pending, the overall interim assessment of the summer transfer window has been positive so far.

Hainer Praises the Work of the Sporting Director

In an interview with the Abendzeitung München, Herbert Hainer explicitly highlighted Eberl’s work. The Bayern president described the signings of Brown and Saibari in particular as a success.

“Max Eberl certainly did a good job by signing both of them,” Hainer explained. The performances of the two new signings at the World Cup, in particular, proved the decision-makers right. “Both are very good—you could see that at the World Cup. Saibari played outstandingly until his injury and scored a goal in every game. Brown is a great player who will be a real asset to us; he’s fast and a good fit for FC Bayern.”

While this statement does not yet constitute an unconditional commitment to Eberl’s long-term future, the president’s public praise can still be seen as an important signal. According to information from within the club, internal communication under Eberl is also said to have improved significantly recently—an issue that had been viewed critically on several occasions in recent months.

Whether this positive development will be enough to convince even the last skeptics on the supervisory board remains to be seen once the transfer window closes. However, the past few weeks have undoubtedly strengthened Eberl’s position at FC Bayern.
