The Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain continues to have an impact at FC Bayern. After Oliver Kahn recently expressed clear doubts about Vincent Kompany’s risky style of play, Thomas Helmer has now taken a similar line
The former Bayern professional expressed his criticism of Munich’s defensive approach in the two semi-final duels against PSG to BILD. „I haven’t always agreed with my dear Oli, to be honest rather rarely. But in this case he spoke a little from my soul,“ explained Helmer
The former international was particularly disturbed by how openly Bayern defended against the attacking strength of the Parisians. In his opinion, Munich found too few solutions, especially in one-on-ones against the quick PSG attackers. „Nevertheless, I asked myself why they didn’t try to double these players more consistently. You can hardly do that on your own in one-on-ones these days,“ said Helmer
The 60-year-old also referred to the enormous quality in the attacking play of both teams. Players such as Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué can hardly be controlled individually on a permanent basis. „You have to come up with something against players like that,“ emphasized Helmer
The former Bayern defender was particularly critical of the lack of tactical adjustments in the second leg in Munich: „I didn’t quite understand that. Paris learned from the first leg and did much better in the second leg. They worked much better defensively,“ explained Helmer
FC Bayern, on the other hand, kept their approach almost unchanged. „Bayern, on the other hand, continued to play as before,“ the former defender noted

Helmer thus indirectly supports the criticism of Oliver Kahn, who recently stated on Sky that Vincent Kompany’s system „involves a lot of risk“
Kahn had also warned against permanently relying on Munich’s enormous attacking power: „You can’t always score four goals if you get two or three.“
Helmer believes this is currently one of the record champions‘ biggest problems: „They probably thought it would work, because it has often gone well in the Bundesliga: a 4:3 after a 0:3, a 3:2 after a 0:2 in Freiburg. That can be deceptive,“ he warned
Despite the public criticism, there is currently little to suggest that Vincent Kompany will fundamentally change his style of play. The Belgian has recently emphasized several times that Bayern do not want to give up their attacking DNA
Internally, the bold approach continues to be expressly supported, but at the same time there is a growing realization that Munich must become more defensively stable at the absolute top level if they are to make a big push in the Champions League
Helmer concluded clearly: „I think they have to work on that, and so does the coach.“
